My predictions about Baby #2...

While there is an element of surprise in every birth story, it's especially fun when you don't know the sex of the baby. As my due date draws near, I've been making some guesses as to who this baby is and how h/she will arrive. I could be completely wrong, but these are my best guesses. The alternative to scenario below is that I go into labor early and deliver in some remote mountain town while we are camping this weekend. Who goes camping at 38 weeks pregnant? I'm not sure if this is the funniest or stupidest thing I've ever done, but I'll let you know know next week!

Gender: Girl

Size: Over eight pounds but not as big as Zianne

Birthday: I think this baby will be "late" but not as far past due as Zianne {nine days!}. My guess is between June 14-21st. Probably around the 20th.

Labor: I think it will be long, but, again, not as long as my labor with Z {20 hours!}. I'm guessing between 10-16 hours.

Names: Ha! Our boy name is decided {and, no, I'm not telling}, but our girl name is completely up in the air, which is extra funny since we think it's a girl. I thought we had a handful of names left on our "list" after Zianne, but Micah vetoed them all early in this pregnancy. I thought maybe we had settled on a new one over the past few months, but Micah is still uncertain about it. Then he recently started reconsidering one he had nixed ages ago. We finally talked girl names in the car on the way home from San Diego last weekend and added some brand new possibilities to the list. It's a mystery to ALL of us and one that will probably be solved at the hospital.

Traveling with a baby

We are still working out our summer plans, but there is a chance we'll attempt at least one flight with an infant and a toddler in August or September while Zianne can still fly for free. Here are my tips for flying with a little one...

Getting through the airport...
Remember you can keep the baby in his or her stroller right up until you get onto the plane. You'll leave it by the door of the plane and it will be waiting for you when you get off. But don't forget to get a gate check tag for the stroller at the service counter at your gate. I always forget and have to go back for it when trying to board. I've also heard baby wearing is actually easier at the airport than dealing with the stroller at all, and I'm excited to try it with Baby #2.

Car seats...
If your baby is still using an infant carrier attached to the stroller, sometimes they'll let you take it on and put it on the seat next to you if there is room. If the plane is full, you'll have to gate check it with your stroller. When you move to a convertible car seat, you will check it with your luggage. My mom has a cheap(er) car seat for Zianne, so I always take that one instead of our nicer Britax one in case it gets damaged. I've never used a bag for it and it's made it safely through at least eight flights now.

Packing for the flight...
There aren't a whole lot of essentials for the flight, especially if your baby is pretty young. When Zianne was eight months old I packed a couple of toys, a light blanket, puffs for a snack, and a bottle (you can take milk AND water through security with a baby! :). I used a bottle on the plane with Zianne at that age, because she was horrible about nursing in public. When I flew with her a three months old, she nursed or slept the whole time.

Expecting the unexpected...
I would suggest packing an extra outfit for the baby on the plane, just in case. And some of my friends have suggested an extra shirt for you, just in case a large amount of poop/pee/puke happens and transfers to mama. I think it's also easier if you pull out a diaper and wipes and put them in the seat back pocket before taking off, so if you need to jump up and change a diaper suddenly, you don't have to dig through your bag first. Usually, one of the plane bathrooms has a changing table. On Southwest, it's usually the front one by the cockpit, but you can ask the flight attendants before you take off, just so you know.

The essentials for the first year of life...

To the first time mama {and a reminder to myself}...

Here are what I would consider the essentials for the first 6-12 months of a baby's life. I left off many things that you will need - such as diapers, wipes, clothes, bedding, shampoo, changing pad, bath tub, etc. because styles and brands don't really matter for those things and you will receive lots of those items as gifts. Also I wouldn't buy too many pacifiers until you find out whether or not the baby likes them. Z has at least 10 pacis and she never took any of them. Below are some of the bigger items with links to what I think are the best brands/styles to buy. Of course, it's just my opinion! Do what you want! And always remember that babies are technically little people who have opinions and preferences of their own, so you will probably find that you have to buy/return things after your little one arrives. I definitely would leave stuff in packages until you use it... because you never know what you might want to return a few weeks or months down the road. I would even say don't wash a lot of clothes before the baby arrives, because he or she might outgrow things really quickly and it's nice to return stuff and get bigger sizes. Okay, here it goes...

Carrier - I would recommend the Ergo, a ring sling, and/or a Solly Baby Wrap.

Crib mattress - Our Safety 1st mattress is the best I've seen. It's firm and safe. Oh, and you'll want a mattress cover {or two} also.

Infant carrier car seat - I didn't really like ours, so I would go with the Chicco Keyfit 30 instead. That's what most of my friends have and love.

Hands free pump bra - Best thing in the world, especially if you will be pumping at work! But I used mine at home all the time too. I don't know how to pump without it anymore!

Burp cloths - I like these extra soft ones or just regular cloth diapers. You will probably want 8-12 burp cloths at least.

Baby seat - Prince Lionheart all the way! This chair is safer than the Bumbo and is more forgiving of chunky baby thighs.

Pack N Play - This is what Z slept in for the first two months in our room (on the raised bassinet level) and now it's our crib on the go if we are traveling. If you want something smaller for the first few months, a lot of my friends love the co-sleeper bassinet.

Swaddles - These are the best way to put a baby to sleep for the night. Don't mess with the kinds you have to manually wrap yourself. These ones attach easily with Velcro. The Miracle Blanket is also a great swaddle. And we moved to these sleep sacks when Z was about 4 months old.

Stroller - We love ours soooo much! It's lightweight, so easy to fold up, and you can jog with it. We recommend it a thousand times over. You will also need the car seat attachment for the infant carrier and I highly recommend the parent console to hold drinks and keys. We just upgraded to the double version of the City Mini GT, and I'm so excited.

Bibs - These are the ONLY bibs you need once your baby starts solids. Get 4 of these and you will be set. Some mamas have suggested that cloth bibs or bandanas are helpful for spit up and drool in the early months.

Bottles - We had great success with Tommee Tippee, but babies can be really picky about their bottles so be willing to experiment.

Boppy pillow - I personally think it's worth it to splurge on a plush Boppy cover from Pottery Barn Kids. It's so soft and washes well, which is nice since you and baby will be practically living on the thing. Also, the Brest Friend pillow is super helpful for the first few weeks of nursing when you are trying to get things figured out.

Breast pads, milk storage bags, nipple cream - But don't open your nipple cream before the baby arrives, because you might have a really smooth experience and not need it. Plus, the hospital should give you a sample size!

Sound machine - You will probably want some kind of sound machine, not to lull the bay to sleep, but to drown out house noises so the baby can stay asleep. Then you won't have to freak out over doorbells, people slamming the microwave, etc. while the baby is napping. We have this one, but this one is really highly rated too, and some people just use a white noise app on a phone or iPod.

Liners for changing pad - These are great for protecting your changing pad, and I always flip it to the back, plastic side if I'm dealing with a blow out. :) These foam changing mats are also awesome, because they don't require a cover.

Bouncer chair - Your baby will sit in this for the first 3-6 months of life. Z sat in hers to watch Baby Einstein until she was 15 months old. She was way too big for it, but we called it her baby couch.

Nosefrida - Just trust me...

Nursing cover - Z hated to be covered, but I used mine when I pumped at the gym.

Aden and Anais swaddle blankets - Again, don't swaddle with these. Use the fancy velcro ones for that. But these are great for everything else. Keep the baby warm, keep the sun out of baby's eyes, lay baby down, back up nursing cover, back up burp cloth, everything!

You might also want a play mat, jumper, or exersaucer, but I would highly recommend borrowing these or buying them secondhand. They will take over your house for a few months and then as soon as the baby outgrows them, you will want them gone. No sense paying a zillion dollars for brand new ones.

Things I'll do differently with baby #2

I am just a month away from my due date with Baby #2, and I'm honestly looking forward to experiencing a newborn again. Although my transition with Zianne was fairly smooth, I am eager to do the early baby stages again with a little more grace and less anxiety. Some things will stay the same, especially my devotion to sleep training and enjoying those six blissful weeks away from exercise. But ever since I got pregnant I've been thinking about what I will do differently this time around...

More baby-wearing...With Zianne, I only had an Ergo with the infant insert. It's a great carrier, but not the best for the newborn stage. I would wear it around the house sometimes in the evenings, but it was often easier just to hold her or set her down if needed. Now that I'll be chasing a toddler, it seems essential to wear this little babe more often in a way that is safe and secure so I can have my arms free. I'm also excited to for the extra attachment that a soft wrap carrier provides.

Nursing mobility... I had great success with nursing Z and reached my goal to breastfeed for a year. Even the pain of the first few days wasn't too extreme and I ended up returning all the potions and lotions I had stocked up on in preparation for a difficult transition. However, nursing Z was hard in the sense that her feeding sessions easily lasted an hour until she was about six months old, and she weighed over 20 pounds by that point. I needed a Boppy and other pillows to help me support her huge body, so every single feeding I would prop myself carefully on my bed or the couch and settle in for an hour. Nursing on the go was extremely difficult. In addition, she hated being covered from the start, mainly because our AC was on the fritz when we brought her home from the hospital so the thought of wearing an extra piece of fabric over us when it was over 100 degrees outside was unbearable. Plus, I wanted to make sure her latch was okay, so the cover thing just never happened until it was too late and she hated it. This time around I want to nurse more comfortably on the go and teach the baby to tolerate a cover from the beginning. I will probably do one session a day without the Boppy and with a cover, even if we are at home, just so we are ready to nurse easily when we are out and about.

Nursing tanks... With Zianne, I only bought nursing bras because I wanted the support and look of an actual bra to make me feel more like woman and less like a cow. While I still like my nursing bras, I want to try tanks this time around too. I know they make nursing in public much easier since you aren't flashing your stomach every time you lift up your shirt and now nothing sounds more womanly that comfortably breastfeeding my kid, regardless of whether my bra is supportive or attractive {but if you are in the market for a nursing bra, this one wins for most supportive and this one wins for most attractive}.

Essential oils... Disclaimer: I don't sell oils. I don't have a discount. I don't need you to join my team. I don't have undying allegiance to one particular brand. I happily use modern medicines such as diaper cream and Tylenol if needed. However, I dabbled in the use of lavender when Zianne was teething to help with her sleep. I was impressed with the results and since then I've added to my oil stash. I probably have 8-10 oils and I use them sporadically,.. to help fight sickness, aid in sleep, or for calm and focus when working on my dissertation. I'm excited to use oils during the newborn stage this time around - lavender for the baby, mood-lifting oils for me during those first two hormonal postpartum weeks, and I just bought fennel seed for my milk supply. I so appreciate that God has provided natural products to help protect and heal our bodies.

Maternity leave... Although I technically had a six week paid maternity leave with Zianne, I didn't find out it was available until three days before my due date. It was a crunch getting two different subs to cover my classes, and because of the last minute nature of the ordeal the teachers weren't able to do my grading. I still had to check in with students intermittently while on leave and I had grading work piling up for me upon my return. Don't get me wrong... I am thankful I got a paid leave of any sort, but it wasn't super restful. On top of that, I was taking my last grad course and had a three hour class every Monday night with accompanying homework to do. This time around I am on summer break and I intend to soak up every minute with this sweet new babe. I won't be teaching again until mid-August, and I plan to entirely check out of school mode until then. No emails. No writing. Nothing. Just snuggling the baby and getting quality time with Zianne. I'm currently on a marathon trying to get a draft of my dissertation finished by next month, so I can set it all aside for the rest of the summer to savor my newborn, rest, and recover.

Austin City Guide

We went to good ol' Austin, Texas last week to visit my sister, Katie, and her boyfriend. It was the last weekend I could safely fly this pregnancy, so we took advantage of some fairly affordable plane tickets and the fact that our "lap child" can ride free for a few more months. We ate our way through the city in true ATX fashion, and I didn't even have room for some of my tried and true favorites because my stomach was stuffed the entire trip. More importantly than the food though, I got to spend quality time with my sister and I saw two of my best friends {one drove down from Fort Worth and other flew in from AFRICA and met me for lunch the very next day}. Micah and I also got to have a fun date night while Aunt Wanda  babysat {Wanda is my sister's nickname because Zianne has three aunts whose names start with K}.

WHERE WE ATE...

La Mancha... Upon arriving at the airport, we headed directly into the city for a Tex-Mex dinner. Mexican food is better in Texas than anywhere else... maybe even Mexico. I wish I could have had a margarita, but the sour cream enchiladas at La Mancha were truly delish.

KC Donuts... On Saturday morning, we headed south of the city for Micah to try out a cable wake board park. Although I desperately wanted Walton's biscuits and gravy for breakfast, we tried a couple new places instead since were off the beaten path. The cinnamon donuts at KC's were great and they served breakfast tacos and kolaches as well.

Crema Bakery... This was where we stopped for coffee on our way out of town. I am super picky about my coffee and was pleasantly surprised by my iced latte here. I didn't partake of their baked goods, but they had awards hanging all over the walls with accolades such as "Best Wedding Desserts in Austin," so local brides-to-be might want to check this place out.

Lambert's... Lambert's is "fancy barbecue" downtown just north of the lake. My pulled pork was okay, but Micah's coffee-rubbed brisket was amazing. I don't love brisket usually, but I do at Lambert's I guess. We also enjoyed their mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, and broccoli. We wanted to try the waffle fries as well, but we were already overdoing it in the carb department.

Dolce Neve... This was an unexpected stop for dessert. I wanted something cold and sweet after our BBQ dinner and this place {with a zillion five star reviews on Yelp} popped up in my search. This little shop is on South 1st and is so very cute. They use all natural ingredients and make their gelato in the front of the store where all the customers can watch. Their signature Dolce Neve flavor is an egg custard with a hint of lemon. I was hesitant to try it, but I'm so glad I did because it was amazing. My sister and I each got one of their gelato sandwiches, where they layer gelato in between these dainty, delicious cookies. This is will definitely be a regular stop on future trips to Austin.

Sno-Beach... Here's the truth, you guys. We visited Sno-Beach for shaved ice 3.5 times during our three day trip. Sno-Beach is near Zilker Park, which is also conveniently close to my sister's apartment. We stopped by on Saturday after the wake board park and fell in love, despite the somewhat long line and the very annoying bees. I went again on Sunday with my friend Camille and Micah went later that night on our date and successfully begged them to make him a shaved ice five minutes after they had closed for the evening. And we couldn't resist stopping by one more time on our way to the airport on Monday. Some favorite flavors were Tiger's Blood, Pina Colada, Root Beer, Silver Fox, Wedding Cake, Pineapple, and Strawberry Daiquiri. And I definitely recommend adding cream!

Summermoon Coffee - This was my second coffee adventure of the trip. My sister drove me to Summermoon on South 1st for coffee before church on Sunday. Based on Yelp reviews, I ordered a half wintermoon, which is a sweetened iced latte. Order it "half" so it's not too sweet.

Moonshine Grill Brunch - We hit up Moonshine for brunch after church, and although the wait was horrendous, the staff made it bearable by bringing out drinks, muffins, and popcorn. The brunch was a buffet with a wide selection of savory and sweet food and all of it was really good. My favorite dish was the tiny pancakes with fresh strawberries and cinnamon whipped cream.

Jack Allen's - After perusing every downtown option for date night, I decided that Micah would like the menu at Jack Allen's the best. So instead of heading to East Austin as I had originally planned, we headed out of the city. Micah had their famous chicken fried ribs and I had their macaroni and cheese with chicken. Both meals were delicious. The service was quick and friendly, and our seats had a view of the creek that runs behind the restaurant.

Amy's Ice Cream - We walked around Lady Bird Lake after our date night dinner, which left me wanting dessert, obviously. After Micah persuaded the Sno-beach girls to sell him a shaved ice after closing time, we headed to Amy's. This is a favorite of mine since my college days, but I haven't had it for at least two years. I got coffee and white chocolate ice cream and it was amazing as always. Micah wasn't planning to order anything, but when he saw how they use a huge ball of fresh dough to make cookie dough ice cream, he ended up placing an order.

Strange Brew - My last coffee stop of the trip was Strange Brew, which is in South Austin. We were headed south anyway to meet friends for lunch in Gruene, so stopping here made sense. I ordered the signature "Strange Brew" on ice and added white chocolate. I'm pretty sure it was made with half and half and probably had 1,000 grams of fat and 2,000 grams of sugar in it, but I loved it and avoided thinking about its likely ingredients as I drank it.

Gristmill - We went down to historic Gruene, Texas to meet one of my college roommates for lunch on our last day in town. We ate at the famous Gristmill Restaurant, which sits among leafy green trees on the bank of the Guadalupe River. The food is decent and the ambiance is great, especially if you sit out on the back deck.

Sad I didn't eat - Kerbey Lane queso, Taco Cabana tortillas, a chocolate chip cookie from The Driskill bakery...

WHAT WE DID...

Quest ATX - This is the cable wake board park that Micah tried out and loved. I would only recommend this if you are a fairly experienced wake boarder, but it was a cool concept. Instead of being pulled by a boat, your line is strapped to an overhead cable system that pulls you in a circle around the lake and there are different jumps and rails along the route. Micah really enjoyed it, and the rest of us worked on our tans as we watched him from the shore.

Austin Stone - This is where my sister goes to church. I've visited twice. and I really like it. The preaching is solid and the worship in excellent.  She attends the downtown campus at Austin High School, which is a huge congregation, but she she joined a Missional Community right away and met tons of friends her age, despite the church's large size. If you are local and looking for a church, I recommend the Stone, and if you prefer a smaller congregation, the St. John's campus might be for you.

Zilker Park - This is Austin's huge and well-known park. We tried to take Zianne on the children's train there two days in a row with no success. On Sunday the park was too crowded and we couldn't get into the parking lot {back up plan... eat shaved ice, obviously} and on Monday, the train was only running once per hour and we didn't have time to catch the next one before our flight. Zianne enjoyed the playground though, and Micah will probably want to return someday to dive into Barton Springs and stand-up paddle board on the lake.

Lady Bird Lake... After our dinner date, we walked around Lady Bird (formerly "Town") Lake. The moon was nearly full, the paths were calm because it was a Sunday night, and it was a perfect 70-something degrees outside.

Live music at Lambert's... During our walk, we ended up back at Lambert's for the second night in a row because this pregnant woman had to pee. When we were at dinner the night before, my sister was disappointed I couldn't see the cute upstairs lounge area because it was closed for a private party. When we stopped by again on Sunday night to use the restroom, there was live music going on upstairs, so we hung out there for a bit. I can't recall the name of the band, but they were a fun, jazzy brass and piano duo, and apparently they play at Lambert's regularly on Sunday nights.

Gruene, Texas - One of my very best friends arrived in San Antonio all the way from Ethiopia the weekend of our trip, so Gruene was a convenient middle ground to meet up for lunch. Although I saw pictures and heard stories of Gruene all through college, I had never actually visited myself until this past week. After lunch, we stopped in the famous Gruene Hall and visited a few of the cute shops. The town is idyllic and I want someone I know to get married there, so I can attend what is sure to be the cutest country wedding ever.

To Mothers on Mother's Day

It's nice to be celebrated. Everyone likes to be thanked and appreciated. Most of my fellow mom friends are in the same stage I am in... we have a baby or two at home. We chase toddlers all day. We pick up spilled food from the floor, nurse a babe every few hours, and rarely get enough sleep. Raising little ones is surprisingly simple yet grueling at the same time. Some of my friends are in other stages of motherhood... they have three or four kids, they do daily school pick-up and drop-off, they might even be on the verge of the teenage years. Every season is different with its own gifts and challenges.

And on this Mother's Day, no matter what stage you are in, I hope you have a chance to rest and celebrate. I hope your children and your spouse bless you and show you a little extra kindness. I hope you get a nap or a massage or some pretty flowers if that's your thing. I hope you go out to brunch or pick up your favorite fancy coffee on the way to church.

But more than any of these things... I hope you remember the joy of motherhood is not in this one special day each spring, but in all the days before and after Mother's Day. The true joy of motherhood is pouring yourself out for these little ones in the moments that seem, on the surface, to be the hardest and least joyful of them all.

In II Corinthians Paul writes, "I will most gladly spend and be spent for your souls." (12:15). Paul is talking to the church of Corinth, whose members have been sinful and catty. Basically, they are acting like toddlers. He is frustrated with them and trying to correct them, yet he ends his letter with such love. He says he will be spent for them... and not reluctantly. He will gladly be spent for their souls. He longs to see their hearts changed - repentant and joyful before the Lord.

I read this verse yesterday morning and instantly thought of motherhood. At any given moment, you might find me sighing as I pick up the cup thrown by an impatient toddler or try to clean out my child's snotty, congested nose so she can attempt to nap in the midst of her seventeenth cold of the season. You might find me taking a deep breath before I stoop down to a one-year old's level to look into her eyes as I correct her disobedient behavior and teach her about boundaries, patience, and kindness. You might see me chuckle as we say our 57th prayer of the day, because my daughter's favorite activity is to "pway!" all day long and throw her hands in the air when we say "Amen!" I probably look tired when I lug my 35 week pregnant body from bed each morning, after being up from 1-2am with a coughing child, and try to sneak in a quick quiet time before the house wakes up...

It's in these moments I feel spent. I don't know if I can wake up one more time in the middle of the night. I don't know if my swollen body and achy back can kneel down yet again to discipline my toddler. I don't know if I have any patience left to correct the food and cup throwing in a loving way.

And yet... when I think of my daughter's heart and the privilege it is to teach her about Christ and show her the Gospel every day, I realize I am being spent in the best way. I will gladly be spent and poured out for the sake of her soul. Because all these little moments, as tiring and trying as they might seem, are stitched together. I am spending myself to offer my daughter a full childhood of hope, love, protection, discipline and good news. Jesus loves her. I love her. I get to show her this love every day.

Mothers, I hope you have a lovely day today. But even if the day is not as calm and peaceful as you wished for, I hope you take joy in being spent for the souls of your sons and daughters. I hope you endure the small trials of motherhood with a gladness that points your children to the One who endured the cross with joy and was utterly spent because of his great love for us.

...Looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
